FREEZING WORKERS

IMPORTANT CASE BEFORE COURT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Whether the minimum wage order of 1945 entitled freezing workers to a minimum wage for a week including three unpaid holidays was argued in the Court of Arbitration to-day. According to a statement of facts, it, lias been agreed that workers covered by the New Zealand '■(except Westland) Freezing Workers’ Award, 1940. were entitled to certain holidays including Easter Saturday and three other days to lie mutually agreed on. For these three days there is no provision for payment. To-day’s case was an appeal from the judgment of Mr A. M. Colliding. S.M., in the Magistrate's Court in Wellington in which he had found for the defendant, company, the Gear Meat Company, in a, claim brought by the Inspector of Awards for the minimum wage for each of two workers in respect of Ihe week, including the Hire** unpaid holidays. Addressing the court to-day, Mr G. F. Grieve, for Ihe Inspector of Awards, said the point at issue was narrow, hut important, because of the large number of employees who would he affected by the decision.
