ELECTRICAL EXTRAVAGANCE

Sir, —I read through your reports of Monday’s meeting of the Borough Council, and was surprised that our City Fathers had nothing to say or recommend about the pending shortage of electricity in the South Island. Appeals have been made to resident:: of this Island (including Ashburton) to save electricity, as the present supply cannot stand the excessive demand. We are exhorted to turn off superfluous lights, radiators, etc. But our Mayor and Councillors shut their eyes to these requests and allow the street lights to shine out from dusk to between (! and 7 o’clock in the morning—surely an unnecessary extravagance in a small town? As Ashburtonians retire to bed early, the street lights could be turned out at, say v 11.30 p.m., without inconveniencing any ratepayer, and, incidentally, save many units of precious “juice.” A Stitch in Time.
