COUNTY CENTRES
MEETING OF COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the Methven District High School Committee was presided over by Mr A. W. Wilson . Mr R. Lock, who was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by Mr S. Smith’s resignation, was welcomed by the chairman. A request, by Mr Hendry to have the school bus route extended was referred to the Education Board for consideration. The headmaster’s action in joining tire Ashburton County Sports’ Association was approved. The use of the school lawn-mowers by the Methven Club was agreed to. Messrs Jenkins and Lock were appointed a visiting committee for the month. The headmaster’s report, showed tha't the roll numbers were: Primary department, boys 112, girls 96, total 208; secondary department, boys 26, girls 37, total 63; grand total 271. The headmaster reported that the painting of the school buildings was now completed, that the children had been successful in the annual sports in the county championships, gaining two first,s one second, one third, and a third in the Boot pennant relay. Zita Wiliams had tied for the girls’ championship. It was notified that the annual meeting of the Home and School Association would be held on April 29. Vce Skating Club A proposal to form an ice skating club was finalised when a large attendance of supporters held a meeting in Mr J. F. Stone’s office. Mr C. C. Battson presided. The offer of Mr L. L. Richards (Mt. Hutt) to place a dam on his property for the purposes of an ice skating rink was accepted, conditional on the formation of a club’ to control the area, was accepted with thanks. It was decided to form an ice skating club and details for the control of the area were agreed to. An executive committee consisting of Messrs W. C. Battson, ,T. F. Stone, D. Petrie, A. White, with Mr Gordon Smith as lion, secretary, was elected to take charge. .It was decided to hold several working bees to prepare the pond for the skating season. The subscription was fixed at 10s for adults and 2s 6d for juniors. Basketball Teams The following teams will represent the Methven Basketball Club in matches to be played at Ashburton tomorrow, commencing at 2 p.m. (Bus. leaves the square at 1.10 p.m.): Senior A—J.’McGirr (capt), M. Stevenson, M. McGirr, K. Body, B. Wilson* W. Richards, R. Jenkins, N. Dowthwaite, L. Kennish. Junior A—F. Ivelliher (capt), M. Thomson, E. Sutton, E. Hopldnson, N. Carleton, J. Wilson, M. ANNUAL MEETING
LISMORE RED CROSS Mrs Curtis (president of the Ashburton branch) presided at the annual meeting of the Lismore subbranch of the Red Cross Society, i The treasurer reported that the following donations had been made during the year: £2O Mid-Canterbury Central Fund, £lO Therapy (Ashburton County Hospital), £lO Headquarters, £lO Mid-Canterbury Comfort Fund, £5 Greek children. Food parcels and material foy garments sent to Britain £jl3 4s Id. A donation of £5 was made toward the fund for Corso, and collectors were appointed for the street day appeal. Officers elected were: —Patron, Mrs Acland; president, Mrs R. T. Mulligan; vice-presidents, Mesdames McDbugall, Addis and Sparrow; secretary, Mrs Ross; treasurer, Miss Corbett; committee, all attending members; delegate to centre, Mrs Mulligan.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MEETING AT LOWCLIFFE There was a good attendance at the April meeting of the Lowcliffe Women’s Institute, when Miss Tait, president, presided. Tt was decided to conduct au arts and crafts afterno’on each month commencing on April 30. , Comprehensive reports on the recent Federation meeting were given by the delegates, Mrs H. Smyth and Miss Tait. A good service badge has been presented to Mrs D. Mcßae in appreciation of her help while a member of the branch. It is hoped to hold the birthday party on May 30. It will take the form of a concert and dance. An interesting and practical demonstration on book-binding was given by Miss N. Young who also exhibited many novelty articles she had made. Results of competitions were, — Smocking, Miss Tait 1, Mrs H. Price and Mrs A. Davidson (equal) 2.
