COUPON SAVING CAMPAIGN

ACHIEVEMENT IN YEAR REVIEWED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 17. “More than 4,000,0001 b of meat and 175,0001 b of butter have been made available for the people of Britain,” said the chairman of the New Zealand Famine Emergency Committee (Mr T. N. Smallwood) commenting on the results of the committee’s campaign for contributions of food coupons. The campaign has now been in opera- . tion for 52 weeks, Mr Smallwood congratulated the committees in the 20 postal districts on the results of their efforts, but also urged on the public the need for continuing support for the campaign. “The extra meat and butter made available for export by the gifts of coupons has been a real contribution in Britain’s time of difficulty,” he added. “We are receiving from Britain many expressions of thanks of the people there for the efforts beingmade in the Dominion in the way of gifts of food parcels, parcels from New Zealand schools and the making available of more food for export by gifts of coupons” The total of coupons contributed during the 52 weeks of the campaign is 9,424,659, an average of 22 coupons for each household in the Dominion. Calculated on a population basis, the largest contribution has come from Gisborne, where the total of 682,834 coupons represents about SO coupons for each household in the district. Blenheim gave 296,747 coupons, an average of 69 a household and Nelson 522,245, an average of 64. In weekly totals Gisborne has been in the first four 40 times and has headed lists 19 times. Nelson has been in the first four places 40 times also, with eight firsts. Blenheim has been first. 13 times, and Oamaru first eight times. Christchurch is the only main centre to have been first, a position it achieved last week.
