MEAT FOR BRITAIN
AUSTRALIAN SCHEME ORION LEAVES FOOD BEHIND (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright.) (Rec 12.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. A scheme to be launched throughout Australia in a few days is expected to put 10,000 extra tons of meat on the water for Britain by the middle of May. Owners will be asked to consign stock specifically for export to the United Kingdom. This means that owners will be prepared to accept less than local market prices for such stock, i Most of the leading meatworks have agreed to accept stock for slaughter at minimum treatment charges. Some producers are expected to contribute stock completely free. A drive for free fat lambs has been launched by the Returned Soldiers’ League. » The liner Orion left Melbourne with space in her holds which could not be filled by departure time because of working hours lost by the watersiders.
Amongst food left behind was 5000 box*es of butter. The crew volunteered'to help load the cargo, but was refused permission.
