ON BRINK OF INFLATION
Baruch Warns America (Rec. 9.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, April 16. Mr Bernard Baruch, former member of the Uno Atomic Energy Committee, addressing the State Legislature at Columbia, South Carolina,\on the occasion of the unveiling of his portrait, said: “We are on the brink of an engulfing inflation. There is only one way out and that is by work. The more we produce the less will be the cost of living. The more things we can buy the easier will be the building up of our reserves. “We are in the- midst of a cold war,” he continued. “Our enemies are to be found abroad and at home. Let us never forget this. Our unrest is the heart of their success. World peace is the hope and goal of our political system. It is the despair and the defeat of those who stand against us.” I Mr Baruch declared that if America adopted the five and a half day 44liour. week, with no strikes or layoffs, until January 1, 1949, the result would be electrifying. On the other hand, vast inflation would be the greatest blow stripping the United States of her strength, thereby failing civilisation, for there was no other place left to which to turn for regeneration.
