LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” April 18, 1897). Acclimatisation Dinner—The annual dinner of the Acclimatisation Society took plac’e on Wednesday evening at Devane’s Hotel, about 25 members sit- • ting down to a" well-furnislied table. The chair was occupied by the Hon. Major Stewart. The chairman, in proposing the toast of “The Queen,” made reference to the approaching record reign celebrations, in view of which he felt sure the toast would be received with more than wonted enthusiasm. ,1 TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” April 18, 1922). Methven Saleyards—The first sale in the Methven stock yards w T as held on April 22, 1897, 25 years ago. Tomorrow’s sale w’ill therefore see the completion of a quarter of a century of fixtures at Methven. The first sale was held on a Thursday and that day is still market day at Methven. The number of sheep and cattle which have passed through the yards in the past 25 years would make an interesting and impressive return.
