THANKSGIVING AT MAYFIELD Tlie harvest thanksgiving service was held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Mayfield on Sunday evening. The vicar, Rev. W. C. Arnold, preached an appropriate sermon. The organist was Miss Jacobs. The church was decorated with flowers, wheat, fruit and vegetables and quite a good collection of tinned foods for Britain was l'eceived. i Women’s Institute The monthly meeting of the Mayfield Women’s Institute was held in the lodge room when the president (Mrs G. J. Murdoch) presided over a good attendance. The motto for the day, “Take time tq be friendly, it is the way to happiness” was given by Miss S. Murdoch. The sales table, in charge of Mrs T. Taylor, realised 7s 6d. t A very interesting travel talk on a trip through Italy was given by the Rev. J .G. Mathews, and interesting photographs illustrating the different cities were handed round. The comptitions. judged by Mrs G. H. Lamb, resulted:—Runner beans, Mrs C. Gunn 1, Mrs G. J. Murdoch 2, Mrs R. Miller 3; soap, Mrs R. Miller I. Miss E. Goldsmith 2, Mrs C. Sewell 3; truss. Miss E. Goldsmith 1, Mrs M. Austin 2, Mrs G. J. Murdoch 3; best bloom, Mrs G. J. Murdoch 1, Mrs T. Taylor 2. Mrs Scown 3: spike, Mrs G. J. Murdoch 1, Mrs Taylor 2; fruit and flowers, Mrs McCormick 1, Miss S. Murdoch 2, Mrs Dunstan 3: vase of mauve and pink flowers, Mrs J. McCormick 1. Miss E. Goldsmith 2, Mrs G. .T. Murdoch 3. The hostesses were Mesdames H. Scown and C. Dunstan. Plunket Society . ! The Mayfield sub-branch of the Plunket Society held its annual meeting in the band hall in conjunction with a bazaar to aid the funds. The president (Mrs R. Austin) presided and extended a welcome to the visitors from. Ashburton. A donation of £lO was given to the Karitane Hospital, Christchurch, the nurse’s annual report was adopted. The balance sheet showed quite a • substantial credit, ■ Mrs H. L. Barker, Ashburton, presided for the election of officers which resulted: —President, Mrs R. Austin; vice-presidents, Mesdames G. J. Murdoch, K. Moore and R. W. Oakley; secretary, Miss E. Goldsmith; treasurer. Mrs J. D. Murdoch; delegates to centre, Mesdames Austin and Joseph Murdoch; auditor, Mr A. H. Guiney; committee, last year’s committee reelected with power to add. The proceeds of the bazaar amounted to £32. The following were the stallholders: — Cooked foods and cakes, Mesdames R. J. Milligan and C. Dunstan; general and second hand, Mesdames K. Moore and McKeown; ice cream, Mrs G. B. Murdoch; gardening, Mesdames J. D. King and J. McCormick; competitions, Mrs J. D. Murdoch and Misses S. Murdoch and J. McCormick; mystery parcels, Mrsj Joseph Murdoch and Miss N. Goldsmith; afternoon tea, Mesdames G. J. Murdoch, A. Murdoch and A. W. Whiting. . .. Shoulder sprays were presented to the president, secretary, treasurer and Mrs H. L. Bai-ker. • Collie Club The annual meeting of the Mayfield Collie Club was held recently in the lodge room. It was decided to hold the annual trials at Surrey Hills on May 12, 13, and 14, and also to procure a memorial trophy in honour of the late Mr A. N. Grigg. Class 5, heading and yarding event, is to be added to the programme on the first day. It was decided to ask the local branch of the W.D.F.F. ta do the catering. , The election of officers resulted: — president, Mrs J. L. Radcliffe; vicepresident, Mr L. P. Chapman; secretary, Mr A. H. Guiney; treasurer, Mr J. H. Patterson; auditor, Mr D. H. Elms; delegates to Canterbury Collie Dog Association, Messrs J. L. Radcliffe and J. Grieve.. R.S.A. The Mayfield Branch of the Returned Services’ Association held its annual meeting recently, when the vice-president (Mr J. D. Edmond) presided. It was decided to hold the monthly meetings on the last Friday in the month. The new committee is as follows: president, Mr J. D. Edmond; vicepresident, Mr L. F. McLaine; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. H. Guiney; committee, Messrs C. Osmand, D. Houston, H. Anderson, G. Rushton, J. Harvey, S. Huggins and the Rev. J. G. Mathews; auditor, Mr R. H. Bonisch.
COLUMBA OLD GIRLS
MEETING AT RUAPUNA The opening meeting for the year of the Columba Old Girls’ Association was held at the residence of tlie pre- . sklent, Mrs H. R. Tasker, Ruapuna. There was a good attendance of members. Letters of thanks for parcels were received from Miss Honorelle Kellar, London, and Miss Allison Bell, London, both old girls. It was decided to hold the next meeting on May 27 at the residence of the secretary, Miss N. Bruce, at which a floral demonstration will be given by the president. Afternoon tea brought a happy afternoon to a close.

METHVEN LADIES HOCKEY CLUB The annual general meeting of the Methven Ladies’ Hockey Club was held in the lounge of the Town Hall recently. The president, Mrs E. McKendry, presided over a good attendance of members and players. The balance sheet showed the club to be in an excellent financial position. > The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr W. Progressive Euchre The first of a series of progressive euchre parties was held in the lounge of the Town Hall under the auspices of the Methven branch of. the Labour party on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance and an enjoyable evening was spent. Results were; —Ladies, Mrs M. Stevenson; men, Mr IT. B. Owen. It was decided to hold further euchre parties throughout the winter months on each alternate Tuesday. Football Club The following will represent the Methven Football Club at Temuka on Saturday, when two friendly matches will be played (buses will leave Metln ven at noon): —R. Hill, C. Dickson, C.
