FIFTY YEARS SYNE - (From the “Guardian,” April 17, 1897). Marawiti Settlement—Part of the Corwar Estate —some 2027 acres l —-has been acquired under the Land for Settlements Act and will be open ' fbr selection on lease-in-perpetuity on Friday, May 7. The land has been cut into 13 farms, ranging in size from 25 to 330 acres, and the settlement will be known as the Marawiti Settlement. The ballot for any sections for. which there is more than one applicant will take place at Rakaia on May 11. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” April 17, 1922). Holiday Attractions—The lack of Easter attractions in Ashburton has caused a large exodus each morning, whether to picnic grounds or to sporting events in grounds or to sporting events in other centres. This morning was no exception to the rule. About 150 booked by the early train for the gallops at Riccarton, and another 100 went south by the early and - express trains to the Caledonian sports meeting.
