FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Dec.. 5, 1896). General Election —The general election was held throughout the colony yesterday. At Ashburton there was perfect weather and heavy polling throughout the day. The utmost good order and pleasant feeling prevailed in spite of the pronounced differences on the liquor question. The election for the Ashburton seat resulted: —E. G. Wright (O) 1319 votes, J. McLachlan (M) 1080, J. W. Saule (P) 930, J. Ivess (I) 227. The result of the local option poll was announced as follows: —Continuance, 2100; reduction, 1326; no-licence, 1565. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Dec .5, 1921). Important Elections —A number of nominations have been received for representation on the Ashburton Electric Power Board. They are:—For the Borough: Messrs E. F. Nicoll, W. H. Bundle and F. W. Watt; for the County: Messrs Stanley Smith, W. G. Gallagher. A. Horsey, D. G. Wright and W. T. Lill.
