MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE.
YOUNG MAN SENTENCED. (P.A.) AUCKLAND, August 21._ “This was a crime of violence in which the life of a young man was destroyed,” said Mr Justice Cornish in the Supreme Court at Auckland to-day, sentencing a Maori, William Martin, aged 21, to two years’ reformative detention on ja charge of manslaughter. The charges arose out of a fracas between palcehas and Maoris at Pakotai, North Auckland, in April, when William Arneseu was killed by a stone which struck him on the head. “We cannot tolerate violence in the community. It must be stamped out. I do.not overlook the fact that drink was brought, to you,” added liis Honor addressing the prisoner. “But for that you would have gone to bed that night without committing the crime and that influences me in the sentence I am going to pass. “Drink is no friend of a young pakelia, but it is the deadly enemy of a young Maori. Some time, pakehas may learn that they are doing no service to Maoris by giving them drink.”
