BUILDING MATERIALS.
COMMONWEALTH CONTROL. (Reel 2.30.) CANBERRA, This Day. The 'Commonwealth will retain control over building materials while they are in short supply. This was decided at the Premiers’ Conference after the Minister for Post-war Reconstruction, (Mr J. J. Dedman, had delivered an ultimatum to the Premiers. Mr Dedman said that either the Commonwealth would retain control over allocations of materials in short supply, with the full backing of all the Stales, or the States themselves would have to take all responsibility for Hie materials. The conference decided that each Stale would distribute within its own borders materials allotted to it by the Commonwealth. Mr Dedman told the Premiers that, in the year ending June 30, 1947, the target should he not less than 50,000 houses. In addition priority works would total £112.000,000, and private construction £315,000,000. In the next 12 months £50,000.00 worth of building materials would be available. Demands would exceed £10,000,000, of which the Governmen would require £24,000 000 for the 24,000 homes & proposes to build by June 30. 1946. (It has been estimated that the building of 24.000 houses by that date will leave a deficiency of 306,000.)
