“GET OUT AND WALK.”

COLDSTREAM-ASHBURTON ’BUS.

ALLEGATIONS ABOUT SERVICE. '. ■ ■ r:-~ * \ “■ * Allegations that the service on the passenger service operated by MidCanterbury Transport between Ashburton and Coldsfream was so poor that passengers frequently had to get out-at Willowby and walk 'the rest of the way to Ashburfon, were made by Samuel T. Bigham, of Lowcliffe, who sought a. new continuous passenger service licence from the No. 3 Transport Licencing Authority (Mr T. LI. Langford) at Ashburton yesterday. Bigham said it was his intention to run a service from Coldstream to Ashburton. There was not enough accommodation?! bmstlie existing ’bus, and school children had to nurse each other for 30 miles. In addition, the time-table of the ’bus made it necessary for them to leave home at 7.30 aim

“|f tilings are as bad as that, 1 should have thought there would have been complaints from the educational abtfeorities,” said Mr Langford. : jfr R. W. Dixon (Traffic Inspector at. Ashburton): There have been com. points, but not as strong as those of tfrekapplicant. . Questioned by Mr C. G. de C. Drury, wlfb appeared for Mid-Canterbury Transport, Bigliam said he had a .’bus which would seat 12. The ’bus was not* paid for, but he was satisfied he could make the service pay in spite of already running. '|ifr Langford reserved his decision. Authority to run a new continuous passenger service from Coldstream to Ashburton was sought by Daniel Jack Moriarty, who said he was already operating a school ’bus service over that

route. Mr Drury said Mid - Canterbury Transport had no objection to Moriarty operating a service from Coldstream to Ashburton if he charged the same fire as the firm, but did not cover the sa.poe route. Questioned by Mr Haywood, Moriarty: said he had never carried pigs with hii&passengers. He had, however, carried pigs in a trailer behind his ’bus. Decision was reserved.
