As a mark of ’ respect to the late Mr 11. Freeman, a former trainer and refere'e, those present at the Ashburton Boxing Association’s tournament last evening stood in silence. Mr C. H. F. Maynard, the new member of the Borough Council, was welcomed by the Mayor (Mr E. C. Bathurst) on the occasion of liis first attendance at a meeting of the Council last evening. Mr L. L. Aitken (District Manpower Officer at Ashburton) will leave this evening to attend the annual Dominion conference of manpower officers and appeal boards at Wellington. He will return on Saturday. The King lias granted Mr Archibald Hector Mclndoe, C.8.E., M.S., M.S.C., F.R.C.S., the famous New Zealand plastic surgeon, unrestricted permission to wear the decoration of Officer of the Order of Polonia Restituta, conferred on him by the President of the Polish Republic in recognition of his service throughout the war, says a special correspondent of the New Zealand Press Association, Mr Mclndoe was horn at Dunedin in 1900, and graduated at the Otago Medical School. Mr ,T. H. Chapman, who will leave at the end of the week to take up his new position as secretary of the Southland Hospital Board, was presented with a monetary gift by the chairman (Mr C. A. Campion) from members of the Ashburton Hospital Board to-day. The chairman paid tribute to the work of Mr Chapman during his stay of seven years with the Board. Other members spoke in appreciation of Mr Chapman’s services. All expressed best wishes for Mr and Mrs Chapman in their new home.
