BOXING.
AMATEUR TOURNAMENT HELD GOOD FINANCIAL RESULT After training solidly for several weeks, contestants in the amateur tournament held by the Ashburton Boxing Association last evening did not disappoint the large number of people who went to the Radiant Hall expecting to see a series of interesting bouts. The main bout, between R. Tonks (Ashburton) list, and J. Tage Lagi (the Cook Islands champion), list 111 b, resulted in a win for the Ashburtonian on a technical knock-out in the fourth round. The bout was scheduled to go six rounds. An excellent display was given by J. Pile (sst 91b) and F. Hardman (6st 61b) both of Ashburton, in a fly-weight contest. The result was a draw. Pile, who was awarded a special prize for the most scientific display, used uppercuts very effectively. ' A prize for the games loser went to D. Miller (Ashburton) who was beaten in a fly-weight contest by N. Norton (Timaru). The referees were Messrs L. Adams and W. Lister and the judges were Messrs A. W. Argyle, F. Crum, J. B. Cullen (Ashburton), M. McKenna and T. Segers (Timaru). There was a large attendance and the secretary of the Boxing Association (Mr G. V. A professional light-weight contest of 10 three-minute rounds between Percy Kelly (Auckland) and Billy Brown (Wellington) was the main feature of a programme arranged by the Auckland Boxing Association in the Town Hall this evening. A very disappointing bout, in which there was little fighting or action, ended in a win for Kelly in the final round. Brown went to the canvas in the ninth, and twice in the tenth before the referee declared Kelly the winner. GRIFFIN BEATS HANSON. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 11. With a decided advantage in height and reach, Jim Griffin outpointed Tommy Hanson in- a professional welter -weight contest staged by the Wellington Boxing Association to-night.
