SPRING SOWING.

TESTS OF SPROUTED WHEAT. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. An assurance to farmers that they need have no anxiety in sowing slightly sprouted wheat was given yesterday by Dr. O. H. Frankel, director of the Wheat Research Institute. In view of the delays in sowing, caused by the long spell of bad weather, Dr. Frankel was also asked to discuss wheat varieties which may suitably be planted in the spring. From experiments in early sowings this year and controlled laboratory and field germination experiment, it was evident that slightly sprouted wheat was germinating very well, said. Dr. Frankel, and farmers could be assured of satisfactory results in planting it. “Because of the very small proportion of wheat which has been sown so far and the continued wet conditions of the soil, farmers will have a much greater proportion of spring wheat than has been the case in recent years,” lie said. “Those who had not had much experience with the more recent varieties can be reassured that all varieties now in use, -with the exception of Hunters and, to a lesser degree, Dreadnought, are suitable fop spring sowing.” Hunters should not be. sown latdr than August. All other varieties could' be sown as late as September, and iff some cases even later. For the latest sowing on good land, Tainui was an excellent variety, he concluded.
