DESERTER EXECUTED.
SEQUEL TO HOLD-UPS IN ITALY. CONVICTED OF A MURDER (Rec. 12.5 p.m.) 'LONDON, June 11. Werner Schmiedel, a deserter from the United States Army, who last autumn and winter led a hand of American and Canadian deserters into the wave of hold-ups around Rome and Naples, was to-day hanged in the prison yard at Aversa, reports the Associated Press of America correspondent at Rome. A special court-martial on March 27 convicted Schmiedel of the murder of an Italian civilian during a hold-up in a restaurant at Rome.
The crimes of the gang included the hold-up of the motor-car of a Polish general, Anders, on the Rome-Naples highway.
