FIRE BRIGADE COSTS.

BIGGER ALLOWANCE ARRANGED. Costs having increased considerably since 1913, when the last agreement between the Borough Council and the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was drawn up, the, Council last evening agreed to a request by the brigade that its annual subsidy be increased from £l2O to £2OO. This will permit an increase from £2O to £4O in the social allowance of the brigade. It was agreed to increase the retainer of the deputy-superintendent from £5 to £lO.

Illustrating how obsolete the existing agreement was, the Mayor said it dealt with stabling and feeding the horses of the brigade. Mr W. S. Kerr: “The brigade is proud of its equipment. The Council is responsible for having a fire brigade and the brigade is a wonderful team of men which deserves the fullest support of the Council.”
