“BE BORN ANEW?”

OFFER TO JAPANESE. SYDNEY, March 12. The Americans are using public address systems at Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville, to exhort the Japanese to surrender, writes Mr Denis Warner, Sydney “Sun” war eorrespondent. Knowing many Japanese consider life has ended if captured, the Americans invite them to “he horn anew.” Loud-speakers blare across (be treescarred wastes of no-man’s-land at hourly intervals.

This is a typical broadcast: “War on Bougainville Island is finished, as far as the Americans are concerned. We ask the Japanese troops to surrender now and he horn anew. “Come into our lines unarmed, with bare waists and arms uplifted. We will see that alter the war you are relocated somewhere outside Japan.” The Red Cross flag is prominently displayed during the broadcasts, but so far no Japanese have accepted the offer.
