CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. NEW ZEALAND CUP DAY. REVIEW 1 OF THE FIELDS.
Tlio Canterbury .Jockey Club will open the racing carnival week with its first day to-morrow. The main interest lies in the New Zealand Cup, and with 22 acceptors, the public will have a hard task before them to sort .out a likely winner. Good fields are carded in all but the Hurdles and patrons should enjoy an excellent day’s racing at Riccarton. The win-and-place totalisator will be in operation. Following is a review of the events: — Spring Hurdle Race Handicap. With only seven acceptors, Dividend seems to stand out from the rest. Espcrance Bay appears to have the best chance of the others. Jewish Lad might surprise, but the public will most likely prefer Dividend, Esperance Bay. The Spring Plate. Sternchase and Wings of Song, both North Islanders, dominate the field. Others who hold chances include Chirp, Lights Out, Nigger Bov, Moorsotis and Great Swoop. The last-named should keep the North Islanders busy. The favouritism should be in the following order Sterifchase, Wings of Song, Great Swoop. Linwood Handicap. There is .plenty of form in this event and favouritism will be disputed by four or five horses. Montessa and Asia are likely to be first choices, but Hearth,. Raeburn, Counter Lunch and Flame Queen will not be far away. The final choice of punters may be Montessa, Asia, Hearth. New Zealand Cup. The class horse of this field is undoubtedly Royal Chief, but the top weight may he a little too much foi him. Yours Truly appears to bo a good second choice, and on recent form should lie in one of the plates. Others with good chances are Arctic King, Lady Fiirst, Centrepoise and Thermidor. The judge’s placings should include Royal Chief, Yours Truly, Lady Fiirst. Welcome Stakes. Doria, winner of the McLean Stakes and second in the John Grigg Stakes, should go out favourite here. Enrich, Blue Abbey and Shikari are the pick of the rest. The • final placings will most likely include Doria, Enrich, Blue Abbey. Apprentices’ Handicap. The winner of this race last year, Auctor, should again lead the field home, but Night Pal, Anita Foe and Great Legion will keep him very busy right up to the post. Of the rest Prudent Price and Merry March may surprise. The judge’s numbers should include Auctor, Night Pal, Great Legion. ' Stewards’ Handicap. The task of trying to pick the second leg of the double is a very easy one according to punters, as Beaulivre has dominated the betting. His most likely opponents will be from the improving lightweights, and Globe Trotter, Rakahanga may beat, him in. Of the rest. Niglitcalm, Toro Konra and Strip appeal. The three placings should be Beaulivre, Globe Trotter, Nightcalm. Riccarton Handicap. Bnrnn, if lie hopes to annex the Derby, should have a good show in this event. Others with good chances appear to be Sovereign Lady, Lady Montana, Wardress and Wine Card. Queen Dorothy and Dainty Sue may surprise bore.
