NOVELTIES IN FLOWER AND VEGETABLE SEEDS. • Just a Few Taken from our Novelty List Toogood’s Ten Weeks’ Cabbage. A very early and quick developing Cabbage. The plants have only a few small outsize leaves, of a dark colour, all of which are edible. 6d and 1/- per packet. Fletcher’s Ideal Carrot. It is quite 'coreless, and has tender, almost transparent flesh of rich colour. Suitable for household, or market gardener who wishes to supply produce of extra good quality and £>f rich colour. This is a new Carrot of French origin, which we have pleasure in offering, as we believe, it to be one of the finest high-class varieties where quality is the main consideration. Although it has fine leaves “The Ideal Carrot” is a quick and vigorous grower, and will be found to be the ideal Carrot either for household or for the market gardener who wishes to supply products of extra good quality. 6d per packet. Mrs Ricketts (Eltham, Taranaki), writes : “I find your Ideal Carrot excellent, and planted about November keeps well through the winter. Never becoming hard, even in the following spring.” , 1 . / Genuine Swedish Giant Cabbage. A most rapid grower, and great blight and drought resister. Grows enormous heads, very solid and compact, and as hard as a cannon-ball, frequently measuring 24 ins across. Has vei’y few outer leaves. Quality unsurpassed for delicacy of flavour. Leaves are fine grained, tender and crisp. 1/- Per packet. 4/-"per oz, tiz lots only.. New Globe or Turnip-Rooted Parsnip. Round, Flat, Short Leaved.—A worthy companion to the great Marrowfat Parsnip, which has found a most wonderful sale. Grows quickly, and its pure white flesh is firm and tender. On account of its very short foliage, this Parsnip requires considerably less room, and therefore yields larger crops than the stronger leaved vai’ieties. Very suitable for planting in shallow soil. 6d per packet. Luther Burbank’s Tomato. This Tomato is one of Burbank’s, which speaks for itself. Earliest of earlies—seven to ten days ahead of others. Smooth, thick, solid, heavy, medium to large. Bright crimson tomato. 6d and 1/- per packet. Burpee’s Pumpkin, “The Orange.” The fruits are of medium size, averaging about 10 inches in diameter almost round and slightly ribbed. The skin is deep orange yellow, and the flesh is rich orange, meaty, sweet, fine grained and of superb flavour. Easily stored for winter use. Very suitable for small families. Once grown—always grown. 6d per packet. Brussels Sprouts, Eversham Special. This is the earliest grown, and produces an abundance of large, heavy sprouts of splendid quality. An excellent strain, especially for market growers, on account of its earliness. Brussels Sprouts are a quality vegetable. The plants are hardy, and in warm situations will live throughout the winter without any protection. The quality, and flavour of the sprouts are improved by frost. Sow the seed thinly in drills early in August and transplant to rows 3 to 4 feet apart in the garden. 6d per packet. Burpee’s Iceberg Lettuce. Crisp as Ice—Tender and Juicy.—-A very popular variety of medium size and outstanding brittleness. Compact heads, with a solid heart of clear white colour, protected by a few tender outer leaves. It withstands the heat of summer remarkably well and keeps in first-class condition for a long time. 6d per packet. Celery, Tall, Golden, Self-Blanching This is a new, tall strain, which differs from the ordinary self-blanching by making a decidedly heavier and tall growth. The foliage is also .quite distinct and has been bred for disease resistance. The slender heart is well blanched. It is an extra early variety which should be carefully tested by celery growers for the market to see if suitable for their particular locality. ' 1/- per pkt, Lightning Cauliflower, Early Six Weeks. This is undoubtedlyi the earliest Cauliflower grown, and* will become the most popular early Cauliflower. Plants planted out in September will commence to form fine heads in November ; this is about 6 to 7 weeks from putting out the plants to cutting the first head. Comes in a little earlier, in warm climates, and takes a little longer in cold climates. 1/- and 2/6 per pkt. Celery, Dobbie’s Invincible White. Verv large, solid heads of magnificent quality. 6d per packet. New Zealand or Hot Weather Spinach. The plants resist heat and make a strong growth, supplying during summer and autumn an abundance of rich green leaves. Superior in quality to ordinary Spinach. Will not stand heavy frosts. 6d per packet. “Russell” Lupins. This wonderful strain has giant-size spikes, which are often 3J feet in length. The individual flowers are fan-like in shape, the standards being expanded like that of Sweet Peas, with an enormous range and unique character of colouring. Many, are self-colours, quite new in Lupins—r Pure Yellow, Orange and Rich Bright Crimson. 12 seeds 6d; 30 seeds 1/-. New “Cupid” Zinnias. The smallest of all. Compact plants, about 1 foot tall, consist of a large number of slender branches, which give the plant a well rounded bushy habit. Each of the numerous upright stems bears a miniature flower. Plants are a mass of colour through the summer and autumn.' Especially adapted for borders,, etc., useful for cut flowers. 6d per packet. Burpee’s Petunia “Twinkles.’’ Masses of small, brilliant rose flowers starred and marked pure white. Very compact and free blooming. Much superior to “Rosy Morn.” 6d per pkt Carnation, Giamt Double Chabaud (Clove Scented). Finest mixed, including the following Crimson, Brilliant Scarlet, Terra Cotta, Carmine, Pale Pink, Deep Rose, Ruby Purple, Salmon Pink, Snow. White and Deep Yellow. These Carnations should prove unusually attractive for market growers, both as cut flowers and as a pot plant. They give abundance of flowers of splendid form. If the seed is sown in July, they can be planted out in the open in November, and will commence to flower in January continuing throughout the season. Theyi are perfectly hardy, and if in a fairly sheltered spot will stand through the winter. 1/- per packet. Zinnia, “Fantasy.” Well rounded, medium sized double flowers, 3 to 3£ inches across, composed of a mass of Twisted Tubular Petals, which give them the appearance of a shaggy Chrysanthemum. The colour range includes the brightest shade of Rgd, Yellow and Orange as well as many choice pastel shades. Plants grow about 2 feet tall. Very nice for table decorations and bouquets. This is one of the finest Novelties of this season. 6d per pkt. Giant Double Nasturtiums, Sweet Scented. New Salmon Beauty—Exquisite Salmon, with a deep mahogany zone at. the base of the upper petals, extending in pretty narrow lines about half way to the edges of the petals. 6d per packet. Scarlet Gleam—This strain is similar to “Golden Gleam” only scarlet in colour. The flowers are double and sweet-scented, being borne on dwai’f plants like the celebrated “Golden Gleam.” 6d per packet. Golden Gleam—Rich Golden semidouble flowers, with a pleasing perfume. 3d and 6d per packet. Burpee’s Double Mixed—A wonderful mixture of beautiful colours. 6d per packet. Poppies, Gornara Pinks. This is the finest of Iceland Poppies, being a re-selected and improved strain, introducing a number of new and distinct, soft and showy shades. 1/- per packet. Dahlia, Miniature or Charm. % , “Charm” Dahlias are becoming increasingly popular, on account of their small, attractive flowers in many striking colours. Splendid for cutting. By sowing seed early in July, in heat (plant out in October), will bloom from December till frosts. 1/- per packet. World Wonder or Miracle Pea. Drought-resisting—Early main crop wrinkled variety. Height 4 feet. Pods long, very deep green, well filled with peas of rich colour and exquisite flavour, and a remarkably heavy cropper. We strongly recommend it as invaluable for prolonging the pulling season for green peas. Being a drought resisting, culinary pea, our customers speak of it in terms of the highest praise. 1/- per packet. Burpee’s Blue Bantam Pea. This is imported from Burpee’s (who first introduced this variety), and is true to name, whereas some of the N.Z. grown are very mixed. 6d per packet, Giant Stride Pea. This pea is of recent introduction,and is an early main crop variety, growing to a height of 2 feet. Covered with huge pods, 5 to 6 inches in length, containing 8 to 10 green peas of delicious flavour. Very large podded, dwarf exhibition variety. 9d per packet.
