WARRANTS OF FITNESS
REGULATIONS CHANGE NEEDED. (Per Press Association), AUCKLAND, May 17. "When several motorists were charged in the Magistrate’s Court for failing to carry warrants of fitness, SeniorSergt Caldwell said, it'was time that public attention, was drawn ,to the frequency of offences. “We find that in most cases where collisions occur one of the drivers and sometimes both have no warrants of fitness,” said the Senior Sergeant, j “Many persons apparently leave the taking out of licences “to garages and people who supply them with cars.” It was pointed out that the offence was not merely to possess a warrant, but of failing to carry it. The Magistrate (Mr C. R. Qrr Walker) said that the weakness in the regulations was that there was no specific date fixed for the taking out of warrants of fitness. If it were made compulsory that warrants were taken out the same time as the cars were licensed or relicensed, then the motorists would have no excuse whatever. “I think it a good idea if the authority dealing with relicensing of cars insisted that warrants he obtained,” he added. Treating 20 cases on their merits, the Magistrate imposed fines of from 10s to 30s.
