RHODES SCHOLARSHIP.

TWO CANTERBURY NOMINEES. AIR NEAL M. BUCHANAN. (Special to the “Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, September 19. The Canterbury University College Rhodes Scholarship nominees are Alessrs Neal H. Buchanan and Crowley Weston. Air AVeston, who was educated at the New Plymouth Boys’ High School, is a Bachelor of Laws. He has been admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court. Ho is sitting for the degree of Master of Laws this year. Mr NEAL H. BUCHANAN. Air Buchanan is 22 years of age and is a sou of Air G. H. Buchanan, ioimerly of Ashburton. He was educated in Christchurch at Christ’s College, Medbury Preparatory School, and has been at Canterbury University College since 1935. At Aledbury School his sporting achievements included the captaincy of the cricket eleven, a place in the first fifteen, and a prize for the best all-round boy at sport. He took a Somes Scholarship (under 14) to Christ’s College in 1928. At Christ’s College be twice represented Canterbury in boys’ cricket, took two more Somes Scholarships, and passed the matriculation examination in 1931. In 1933 he was on the Credit List in the University Entrance Scholarship Examination, and in 1934 he was head of the school. Special prizes that he took were Tailored Prizes in Literature and History, the Orford Prize for Latin, and the Balfour Prize for Divinity. He was editor of the school magazine, secretary of the Literary Society, and a non-commissioned officer in the school cadets. Ho represented his house at cricket, football and fives. Ho took ’ a junior university scholarship in 1934. In 1935 Air Buchanan went to Canterbury College and passed the first section of the LL.B. degree. The next year, while working for the second section, lie became literary editor of tlie “Canta” (the Canterbury College magazine) and was elected secretary of tho Old Collegians Cricket Club. Last year lie passed the third section of his law degree and the second section for a B.A. He represented the college at cricket at both inter-college matches, reached the Canterbury College first grade in hockey in his first season, and was on the committee of the college cricket and badminton clubs. He was still literary editor of “Canta” and became foundation secretary of the New Zealand University Press Bureau.

This year lie is taking tho final section of the law course, and a further section for the B.A. degree. He represented Canterbury College in one cricket match and played throughout the season for the Old Collegians first grade team, and was playing first-grade hockey throughout the season. He was also captain of the badminton club, and was on the cricket club committee. Mr Buchanan has been on the Students’ Union Council this year as well as being general editor of “Canta.” If lie is awarded a Rhodes Scholarship Air Buchanan hopes to take a Greats degree at Oxford, which would suit him for the specialised training in Librarinnship which would have to follow. He has boon interested in library work for the last two years and intends to make it bis career.
