SERIOUS ASSAULT

WOMAN IN A MOTOR-CAR. ALLEGED FIRING OF A SHOT. SUSPECTED MAN IN HOSPITAL. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, This Day. A woman aged 21 was seriously assaulted on Saddle Hill Road last night in a rental car driven by her assailant. Two motor-cyclists passing rushed to her assistance, and it is alleged that the man in the ca.r fired a shot at them and at the women when the latter was escaping from the car. He then made off to Dunedin in the car. The woman was taken to a private hospital, where she was found to be suffering from a fractured arm, a w'ound in the wrist, a dislocated foot, and a deep scalp wound on the forehead and back of the head. Investigation by the police led to Waitati, where an abandoned car was fopnd with the woman’s glove and purse within. At 8.15 this morning the police found the alleged assailant wandering near the Oil Company’s premises, with a bullet wound in his temple. He was wringing wet as though he had been in the water. He is being detained at the hospital, but was not arrested. The police are not divulging the names of the parties, but an inquiry at the hospital reveals that Wilfred Richard Curry was admitted at 9.15 with a shot below the cheekbone. His condition is not serious.
