LINCOLN COLLEGE

GOVERNMENT GRANT OF £26,000. SOME ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGES. ("Per Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, November 29

A sum of £26,000 is involved in assistance which the Government has decided to give Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, according to advice which has been received from the Minister for Agriculture (the Hon. W. Lee Martin) by Mr 11. S. Kyle (National, Riccarton), who is a member of the Board of Governors of the college. The assistance will be covered in a grant to be made on the Supplementary Estimates, which will probably be before the House of Representatives this week. Concurrently with the grant, the Government will bring down legislation providing for the co-ordination of the administration of the two agricultural colleges—Massey and Lincoln—under one authority. It is the intention to place Lincoln College on the same basis of financial assistance as Massey College. Mr Kyle has been advised tliat the total amount involved for Lincoln College will he approximately £26,000. This money will be used for improvements and additions to accommodation, plant, and in generally improved administration of tho college. Negotiations for the grant have been going on between the Government through Mr Lee Martin and the college authorities for some time, but were dependent in their finality on new legislation which has been drafted for the joint control of the two colleges. It is expected that this Bill will be brought down before the adjournment, although with the rush of legislation inseparable from the approach of the Christmas recess there has been some delay. However, whether the Bill comes down will apparently not effect the passing of the grant on the Supplementary Estimates. This grant will probably amount to £15,000, and the balance of the total of £26,000 will be found in other ways. The Bill aims at changes, not only in joint administration, but in the control of the money to be granted, although these details will not be available until the measure is finally drafted.
