AN IMPROVEMENT

IN THE DEPRESSED AREAS. DECLINE IN UNEMPLOYMENT. DEVELOPING NEW INDUSTRIES. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, November 24. • Considerable improvement in the economic position in special areas in England and Wales which suffered most acutely from the economic crisis of 1931, is recorded in the report by the Commissioner (Sir George Gillett). The report shows that unemployment in tlio aieas has fallen by 25.6 per cent., of which only a small part is due to transference out of the areas. The greater part of the recovery has been independent of the Government armament programme. In some cases the defence programme retarded development, as the demand for constructional materials has been so great that the erection of new factories lias been delayed. The Coiiimissioner expresses his determination to press forward with the development of new industries.—British Official Wireless.
