WINTER SHOW

RESULTS ON SECOND DAY.

DOG SECTION A FEATURE.

CATS AND RABBITS JUDGED- \.

THE SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITORS

The Winter Show of the Ashburton Fanciers’ Society was continued in the Arcade to-day, when the dog, cat and rabbit sections were judged. Entries in cats, numbering 35, had declined by five from last year, while there were 34 rabbit entries, 28 less than last. year. Dog entries showed a big increase, however, mainly due to the Society having instituted a one dayshow this year, instead of two as in previous years. The dog entries total" led 150, which was 80 more than last year, and the biggest percentage in—crease of any section in the show. 'lhe show was officially opened last evening by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods), who was introduced 'by the president of the society (Mr WV. H. Amos). Mr Amos said that congratulations were due to the committee as a result of the increased entries. Thanks were due to the stewards of the women’s classes in carrying on. in the limited space available. He expressed the thanks of the Society to Messrs [Bullock and Company for the use of ‘the Arcade, and also to tenants in it :who suffered inconvenience as a result of the show. The Mayor said that the large number of entries must be very gratifying to the Society, and this was due to the efforts of the chairman and members; of the committee. There was no doubt ‘ about the value of the show and the competitive feeling it created, and all that was necessary to make it a success in future was public support. He also expressed appreciation to the owners of the property and tenants for permittinig the Arcade to be used, and said it was a long time since the Arcade had first been used for the purpose, and that he quite realised the difficulties surrounding its use. He hoped that the support that had been anticipated would be forthcoming on the following day, so that the Society would be in a position to make a profit on the show. “In some future time it may be able to provide a building more suitable to the occasion,’ ’ he remarked. The Zouch Cup for the best bird in the show was won by T. Rattray with a barred Plymouth Rock cockerel. T. Findlay was the winner of the Collett Challenge Cup for the best utility black Minorca cockerel or pullct. The Peter Donald Memorial Cup for the best black Orpington was won by T. S. Hanna, who also won the trophy last year. The New Zealand Rhode Island Red and Orpington Club’s prize fer the best Orpington in open classes was won by D. Kelly. T. Rattray was also the winner of the Davis Memorial Cup for the best cockerel or pullet. The Smith Cup for the best cock canary was WOll by Gr. Duggan, who also won the Society’s special for the best hen canary. The Connolly Cup which is awarded in the cookery section, was won by Mrs L. Maginness, for the second year in succession.

Praise was given to the display of needlework by the judge (Miss Bridge—man), who said that the work was of high standard and quality, and that she had never come across such outstanding work’ in other centres where she had been judging.
