NEW BRIDGE
RANGITATA RAILWAY. FIRST TRAIN T 0 GROSS SHORTLY. OPEN TO TRAFFIC ON TUESDAY. The north-bound express on Tuesday afternoon will be the first regular train to run over the new railway bridge over the Rangitata River, work on which has practically been completed. The changing over of the rails to the new bridge will take place for three hours immediately before the express arrives at the river, and thereafter the bridge will be used for all rail traflic. l The main line between E‘aling and ‘Rangita-ta will be blocked against alll traffic from 2 to 5 o’clock in the after? noon. to allow the deviation to be carried out. The last train to go over the old bridge will be a. mixed train from ’l‘imaru, due to arrive in Ashburton at 3 o’clock. The new bridge, which has been in course of erection for three years, is 1 mile 5 chains long, and the ap—proaches are 10 chains long. The design is similar to that of the new railway bridge over the Ashburton River, but the Rangitata Bridge is constructed on a much larger scale,
Speed for trains will be restricted to six miles an hour on the approaches and 1.5 miles an hour 011 the bridge until the structure has had time to consolidate.
