(From Our Own Correspondents.) METHVEN. OiDDFELLOWS’ LODGE. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Methven Lodge, M.U.0.F., was held on Wednesday evening, when the N.G. (Bro. R: Lilley) presided over an attendance of 23. Sick pay was passed in favour of seven members. The following were installed. as offi-cers:——-—N.Gr., Bro. K. “Cc-0k; V.‘G., Bro. 'G. Lochhead; ESL, Sister, A. McC’lea; Ward-en, Bro, K. Fryer; Guardian, Bro. W. Currie; R.S.N.G., Bro. Burt; R.S.V.G., Bro. \Vright; L.S.N.G., Bro. T. Lilley; L.‘S.V.'G., Bro. Findlay. Four candidates were proposed. Additional arrangements for the forthcoming annual ball were made. The Mothers' Union. The monthly meeting of the Mothers’ . Union was held yesterday afternoon; There was a large attendance of mein-l bers and Bible Class girls. Mrs K. Dickie (enrolling member) presided. I Blrs A. J . Petrie (Aslrbnrtoai) gave an interesting address on the Old Testa—ment teaching, with special Mothers’ Union illustrations. Mrs :Petrie was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs E. A. Bland was the accompaniste for the singing of the hymns and Nunc ED'imitis. ’ Afternoon tea was later dispersed. Baahelors' and Spinsters’ Ball. The Methven Town Halt was crowded last evening when the spinsters and benedicts of Methven entertained their bachelor friends at their annual ball. The attendance was representative of Methven and the surrounding districts, while many visitors from other parts attended. A strong committee under the guidance of Mr W. J. Dolan, with Miss Beryl Reid; as secretary, had charge of the arrangements, Mr Dolan, on behalf of the commit—tee, extended a, welcome to all and Wished them an enjoyable time. Music was supplied by Cook’s Orchestra, extras being played by Mrs A. Lawrence and Mr H. Bland, The duties of Master of Ceremonies were capably carried out by Mr W. J. Dolan, assisted by Mr M. Holland. A Monte Carlo Waltz was won by Miss Phyllis Byrrows and Mr G. \Vaddington, jnr., and amother by Miss AlmaMeGirr and Mr Frank Briden. LISMQR E. FARMING CONDITIONS ‘ With the continuation of mild weather, farmers are proceeding with the work of sewing; wheat and' top— . dressing pastures. There is still a fair amount of feed on grass paddocks, and it will not be necessary to start feeding turnips for some time yet, as sheep and other stock are in first-class condition.

' WILLOWBY. COMBINED BIBLE CLASS. The Combined. Bible Class met at the Parsonage on’W‘ednesday evening. A good attendance was presided over by the Rev. L, L. Avery, who led the studies for the evening. The new syllabus is to~hand and the winter session promisese to: be yery interesting. Several hymns were sung from the new Methodist hymnbook. Mrs Avery provided supper at the conclusion of the meeting. ' - EIFFELTON. . FORTNI‘GHTLY EUCHRE PARTY. There was a splendid attendance at the fortnightly euchre party held in the school. First (prizes were won by Mrs Keating and Mr E. Seal, and second prizes ‘by Mrs Hawkins and Mr E. lParsons. Music for the dance was sup—plied by Mrs J. McQuilkin, jnr., and Mr H. Hawkins, Farming ConditiOns. Despite heavy frosts, there is still a. good deal of growth, and wheat crops are making remarkable progress for this time of the year. Stock are looking particularly well, thanks to the plentiful supply of winter feed. ’ RAKAIA. WOMEN ’S INSTITUTE BIRTHDAY. ' The Rakaia \chen’s Institute celebrated its fifth: birthday on Tuesday afternoon. Visitors were present from the Ashburtbn, Dorie, Chertsey, and Te Pirita Institutes. Mrs Newman, a. past president of the Institute, lit the camdles on the birthday cake, and Mrs Niool, the present president, cut it. Items were given by Mrs Minoguc (humorous sketch), Miss Lee (vocal solo), Miss M. Ashford (recitation), Mrs Coatsworth, Miss O. Smith, and Miss J. Stevenson (play reading). Short speeches of congratulation were given by Mrs H. J. Constable and Mrs F. ‘C‘urtis (Ashburton), Mrs Bar—ber (Te Pirita), Miss C’arruthers (Dorie), and Mrs .Doig (Chertsey). Mrs Curtis and Mrs Minogne were presented with. bouquets by Mrs McAnulty and Miss o‘. Smith, mcmbcrs of the Rakaia Institute. A ..

The night circle of the Institute held

an open evening in the Town Hall, Miss 0. !Shannon presiding. Competitions resulted as follows : Tinfoil picture, Miss Nancy Pye 1, Miss S. Breach 2; guessing competition, Miss N. Pye 1. An interesting talk on how to act in cases of emergency was given by Dr. A. J. Brass. Items were given by Misses Jonun Breach, Betty Crossiey, and Edna Kidd. The hostesses were Misses G. Moodie, S. McAnulty, D. Croniie, and D. 001'nelius.
