WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

HAMPSTEAD ANNUAL MEETING. RECENT ACTIVITIES REVIEWED. FOURTH! SUCCESSFUL YEAR. The fourth annual meeting of the Hampstead Women’s Institute was held in the Hall yesterday afternoon, when there was a record attendance. Hie president (Mrs W. J. Miller) occupied the chair. Two new members were proposed, and several new members welcomed. . , Mrs H. J. Constable was appointed delegate to the Mid-Canterbury Federation meeting to be held on April 5. Menjbers were reminded of the group picnic to be held in the Domain on April 4. Mesdames Stone and Turnbull were- appointed delegates to the Wakanui birthday party. Moving the adoption of the annual report, the president referred to the successful year which had been experienced, specially thanking all members of the outgoing committee for their help.. She also urged members to take a greater interest in the competitions. The financial statement showed a very satisfactory credit balance. It was decided to form a junior group and to continue with the choir, arts and crafts circle, play reading circle, and folk-dancing class. Prize-winners for competitions for the year are as follows: —Mrs W. Thompson 1, Mrs F. Rose 2, Mrs Mather 3. The prize for the member entering the most competitions, but never winning a prize, was awarded to Mrs T. F. Smith. Competitions resulted:—Four kinds of biscuits: Mrs Rose 1, Airs Wakelin 2, Airs Cook 3. Heaviest marrow: Mrs Edmondstone 1, Mrs Hunt, senior, 2, Airs Stone, senior, 3. Airs A. J. Ching referred to the work of the choir, thanking Airs H. J. Constable for her help as conductor. A vote of thanks was accorded Airs AlcEachen for her services as secretary. Presenting the retiring treasurer (Aliss O. i Tinker) with a beautiful bouquet, the secretary (Mrs AlcEachen) referred to her work during the past four years. The retiring president (Mrs Miller) was also presented with a bouquet by Airs Constable, who spoke of the work which she had done since the formation of the Institute. Airs Aliller’s work was also eulogised by Mesdames Coward and Rose. Votes of thanks were passed to Aliss 1. Totty for her assistance with the folk dancing class, to Air W. C. Bishop for auditing the financial statement, and to the newspapers for publishing reports. Alembers were advised that the demonstration at the next meeting would be on the making of seagrass stools, and the competitions, a doll from papier mache and a bottle of raspberry jam. Books will be received lor the library. The election of officers resulted:— President, Airs H. J. Constable: vicepresidents, Alesdames F. Rose and H. Flatman; secretary, Mrs K. AlcEachen; treasurer, Airs G. committee, Alesdames A. Sutton, E. Childs, G. T. Clarke, C. S. Hawkey, H. Cooke, Watt and A. Horne.

■Community singing was led by Airs Constable, the accompanist being Airs A. J. Ching. Hostess-es were Alesdames B- Coward, G. Chapman, L. Church, Watt and Aliss Fussell. MEETING AT TINWALD. (SEVERAL PRESENTATIONS MADE. The Tinwald Women’s Institute met in the Palish Hall, Tinwald, last evening, for its third annual meeting. Mrs H. Houston presided over a very large attendance of members and visit•ors, one of the latter being the president of the Gapes Valley Institute. One new member was elected, and three resignations of members leaving the district were received. Airs Coates was appointed delegate to the meeting to be held iii connection with the formation of the Alid-Canter-bury Federation on April 5. Mrs H. ■Christie and Aliss E. Miller were appointed delegates to the South Canterbury Federation meeting at Geraldine on April 3. The treasurer (Aliss E. Houston) gave a full report on financial affairs. There was a credit balance for the year’s working of £6 9s 6d, which members considered very satisfactory. A vote of thanks was passed by Mrs At. P. Coope to the outgoing committee. A presentation was made to Airs S. W- Gower, as a mark of members’ appreciation of the work carried out by her since the formation of the In' ititute. A presentation was also made to Mrs H. Houston and Miss E. Houston for the aggregate points for competitions during the year. Aliss E. Bell also presented Airs Houston with a bouquet. Items were contributed by Aliss T. Clark (pianoforte solo), Aliss N. Bishop (songs and recitations), and Airs D. Shaw (songs). The hostesses were Alesdames J. Jaine and E. Bell, and Misses S. AlcDowell, L. Wilson and T. Clark.
