LOOTERS SHOT

NEGRO RIOT AT NEW YORK. DISORDER THROUGHOUT NIGHT. RED AGITATION BLAMED. .United Press Association —Copyright). NEW YORK, March 20. Throughout to-day detachments of police maintained uneasy order in the negro quarter, Harlem, with prospects of more violence after nightfall. Last night’s rioting continued until dawn. The police in several instances were forced to shoot lobters, two of whom died in hospital torday. About a hundred persons, mostly rioters, are nursing wounds, many of them requiring medical attention.

The boy whose theft of a piece of candy from a store started the trouble was found and his photograph was displayed in the newspapers to show that he was unharmed ; but now the unruly elements are in an uglyi mood and apparently have forgotten the incident involving the child. It is estimated that over 600 shop windows were broken, and other property damaged' to the extent of several hundred thousand dollars.

Many persons attribute the rioting to the serious economic conditions in Harlem, sometimes called “the world’s biggest Negro city,” m which, of 200,000 persons packed into a relatively small area, about half are unemployed, with corresponding poverty and unhealthy conditions. A grand jury, after an investigation, stated with particular emphasis that Communist agitation was responsible for most of the trouble.
