Mr J. Gonnollv, M.P., left last evening for Wellington by the inter-island steamer.
Mr W. H. Nicholson was elected president of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association last evening, when the annual meeting was held. Mr Thomas Stevenson was elected vicepresident.
A Christchurch Press Association telegram states that the resignation of Air W. C. Colee, who lias been headmaster of the Normal School for 10 years was accepted with regret by the Canterbury Education Board tc-day.
Mr H. ID. Acland was taken ill at his home on Saturday and on Wednesday he was removed to a private hospital where he underwent an operation yesterday. He is progressing .satisfactorily.
, Sergeant J. F. Cleary, of Wanganui, arrived in Ashburton this morning to take charge of the Ashburton Police Station in succession to Senior-Sear-geant W. T. Kelly, who has been transferred to Invercargill on promotion.
Airs J. W. Tinker and Aliss E. A. Watson, w r ho represented the Women’s Christian Temperance Union at the Union’s annual convention in Dunedin, returned to Ashburton last evening. Airs W. H. Robinson (South Canterbury District president) will not return until this evening or to-morrow.
Dr. Meredith Aloore, a son of Air and Airs W. J. Aloore, of Ashburton, will leave by the Port Pirie at the beginning of ApriJ to further his medical studies in England. He has recently been acting as medical superintendent of the Bay of Islands Hospital.
Mr H. E. West (chemist to the Wheat Research Institute) was granted three months’ leave of absence by the committee of the Institute yesterday. Air West will go to Canada and the United States, leaving in June, to study advances in the industry. While he is away, Air E. AY. Hullett will be in charge of the laboratory.
As a mark of respect to the late Dr. AlcEvedy, a former patron of the New Zealand" Boxing. Council, members of the Ashburton Boxiiig Association, at the annual meeting last evening, stood in silence. The retiring president (Air H. D. Johnston) briefly referred to tlie interest Dr. AlcEvedy had taken in, and the assistance he had given to boxing and Rugby football.
A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Air Ansley Aloore was passed by the A 1 id-Canterbury Provincial Executive of tlie New Zealand Farmers’ Union this afternoon. The president (Air Raymond Oakley) said that Air Aloore had been associated with the Union for many years, having been president of the Hinds branch and a member of both, the Ashburton branch and the Alid-Canterbury executive. The meeting adjourned to enable members to attend the funeral.
The election of the following as members of the Government Railways Superainnnation Fund Board is gazetted : Louis Vincent Carmine (Representative of First Division, North Island), James Stanley Roscoe (Representative of First Division, South Island); Ernest John Dash, Michael Connelly and Jacob Elliott (Representatives of Second Division, both Islands).
