MAYFIELD. The monthly meeting of the Women's Christian. Temperance Union was held in the Presbyterian Church, Mrs Edmond presiding. It was decided to give two prizes for temperance essays, one for children between the ages of nine and 12 and one for children between 12 and 15 years. An appeal from Miss Lovell-Smith for the organising fund was received. It was decided to give £3.

Films of an educational nature were screened in the Methodist Church by Mr Comes. The picture was recommended to the schools by the Education Board, and 25 per cent, of the proceeds were given to the district school. The Boy Scouts held a social in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association's rooms to make a presentation to their scoutmaster, the Rev. E. A. Osmers, frho was recently married. On behalf of the troop, Mr R. Oakley (assistant scoutmaster) asked Mr Osmers to accept a case.of spoons and a condiment set. Mr R. Oakley, who was chairman, presented some of the Scouts with second-class badges.

LYNDHURST. The annual ball of the Lyndhurst Basketball Club was held last week, and the success of the function was a tribute to .the enthusiasm of the members of the club. The club was formed two years ago. This season it has entered the Ashburton senior competition and has, put up some good games. The hall was decorated with greenery and multi-coloured streamers. Large paper butterflies with greenery adorned the stage. -Cook's Orchestra supplied the music. Mr Gadd was the master of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo waltz; was avou by Miss Cummings and Mr R. Patterson, and a statue daiice was won by Miss M. I. Bland and Mr R. IDunkley.
