HERO IN WELL.
FATHER WHO WAS TOO LATE. An example of a white man's heroism in trying to save a native was revealed at an inquiry in Pretoria into the death of John Perciyal Ley, who died through being overcome by poisonous gasses at the bottom of a disused well. , A native in the employ of Mr Ley s father stated that he had dropped his pipe, which had been given Mm by deceased, into the well. He mentioned it to Mr Ley and it was arranged that they should get it out the next day. The native was lowered down the well which contained no water, but could not find the pipe, and lost consciousness while searching for it. Mr Ley thereupon went down to his assistance, tied a rope round his body but was himself overcome by the fumes. Later Mr Ley's father found two ropes going down the well, pulled up one which was weighted and so rescued his native' servant, but could not recover his son until life was extinct. The well was originally 60ft to /Oft deep, but it had been partly fillefl with pricklv pears and rubbish, so that it was only about 25ft deep when the accident occurred.
