l \ 1 - ' 5‘ ” Sir,——l would like to‘bring before? *your notice an incident of which I was ‘an eyéwitnessrecéntly. . - w A certain member of the titan-ks of the unemployed in Ashburton, n'ho‘ -re«', ceived his I‘egiilal"l‘ation of food,» etc.,' at the Hospital recently, was seen, afew days later, to purchase a ticket and board the south—bound express "for Timaru on a (lay when a race meeting was being held there. He was. also seen on the Timaru racecourse on that same day, and has also been observed; to attend not a few other race meetings in the mot-yery—distant- past. Why should the public be forced'to pay'the. regular quarterly levy and also the tax ‘ on Wages and income to keep this type, of‘p-e-rson employed? : j ', . It appears to me,‘ Sir, that the un—_ employed administration ‘canrbeari a considerable amount of, alteration* in the matter of its allocations of work, etc. I suppose the person infquestion will receive his 2:} days’per'week, 'or three days, as the ease imay be, just ,the same as the man who skimps him? Self to keep his Wife and children clothed and fed to the best of , his ability, while the other man squanders his wages and, no doubt, denies his family some of the necessities of life. . “NEXV —ADMI_NISTRATION.” "
