MEN'S MATCHES.
The Mid-Canterbury Men's Hockey Association's competitions were continued on the Domain grounds on Saturday afternoon, when four matches were played. The outstanding match was„that between Baring Square and St. Andrew's in the senior grade. Square fielded one man short of the rail team and a good standard of hockey was shown by both teams. W. Corbett (Square) shot the only goal registered in the match. Messrs W. C. Bishop and E. Davidson were the referees.
Ashburton defeated St. Stephen's by five goals to two. In the junior grade, Tinwald defeated St. Stephen's by two, goals to one in a very even contest.' C. Thew shot the Tinwald goals, and T. Reeves one for St. Stephen's. Mr W. B; Thomas was referee.
The match between Baring Square and St. Andrew's resulted in a win for the former by four goals to two. N. Leadley obtained two goals, T. Pethick and E. Beayais one each- for Square, while B. Aitken obtained twos goals for St. Andrew's. «
Description of the Play. _ St. Andrew’s (blue and white)_ v. Baring [Square (red and black).— Square, starting play with nine men, won the toss and the bully but h. vanns gave ‘sticks. From a bully :St. Andrew’s were penalised for obstruction. The hit went .to ('i‘orbett, who went through to shoot, but Harwvood had his kicking boots on. From Kelly’s hit, Square carried play to the circle for Corbett to have another shot, but Harwo‘od again kick-ed. The ball glanced oil" his pad, however, and went behindn' From. a corner, Square cleared their line but play returned to Jack Gowans, who had a shot at goal which wentwide. Whitly, for Square, came on at this stage. \Vhite (St. Andrewds) .took the ball tow the circle, but a penalty corner was tne re-' sult. Play was in the middle of the field when half-time was sounded. . l From” the bully play was Carried to ‘Square’s circle only to he returned to, S. Wliitty, at the other end, who gave? sticks. From play in mid-field Uorhettl passed to Fowke, who passedv'baek for Corbet to shoot a goal. Square 1, St. Andrew’s 0. Square were pressing for a time, but H. Gowans and S. McElhinney took the ball to the circle for Elhinueyjo, have a shot, but Tinker kicked out. From half-way St. Andrew’s took the ball to the circle for White to shoot, but Tinker saved by kicking behind; From a- freo hit for obstruction, Whitty sent across to Fowko to shoot, but the ball was hit behind for a corner. From a long corner Reds were awarded a free hit and White obstructed and Kelly’s hit went to the circle to go over when time was called with the score unchanged. St. Stephen’s ‘u(blue and gold) v. Ashburton (black)—Ashburton won the toss and from the bully St. Stephen’s carried play right through to the circle but their shot at‘goal went \x’icle.'Fir<ilii the bully Ashburton took the ball as quickly to the other end, but (St. Ste—phen’s obstructed just outside the circle. R. Pearse took the hit but it went through the posts from outside. A free hit for Ashburton was sent to the circle for Hamilton to find the line. R. Pearce got the ball from a. line-out to heat Hamilton, but Osborn riaturncd it down the middle of the field. lPlay went to Ashburton’s twenty-five, but was quickly returned to St. Stephen’s circle, where Childs was called on to clear. Pearce came again to shoot but missed. Wills soon had a good chance; but kicked the ball from the hit and play was returned to Harper to shoot, )ut C‘hilds kicked out. Play went from Harp-er to centre and N. Willis found ghe net. Ashburton 1, St. Stephen’s ),' For sticks by R. Pearce inside, a )enalty corner was given and Ashbur—ton cleared their goal for the ball to go to Hamilton at the other end, who
gave sticks in the circle. Childs cleared the hit, but he lost his stick and was out of position, when Pearce shot the second goal for Ashburton. Ashburton 2, St. Stephen's 0. Patterson was attacking when he obstructed and play was returned to St. Stephen's circle for N. Willis to shoot another goal for Ashburton and half-time was sounded. Ashburton 3, St. Stephen's 0. On resuming, Watson carried play to the circle, but the defence was, too good. From a hit by Hamilton the ball went to Lees to Watson and to MacFarlane and Snell cleared. Ashburton . were attacking and with play in St. Stephen's tAventy-five, the bail was sent to N. Willis to again shoot a goal. Ashburton 4, St. Stephen's 0. From the bully, Ashburton carried play and after up and down play Ashburton had another shot, but Childs conceded a corner and from the hit in the ball went oyer. Ashburton were pressing, but St. Stephen's took a turn at attacking soon _after. St. Stephen's were in Black's circle and in a movement from Mcllraith "itb Watson, and on to Lees, the last-named, tappep the ball in. to MacFarlane to shoot St. Stephen's .first goal. Ashburton 4, St. Stephen's 1. From an obstruction by Harper, play went ,to half-way and'was taken back by Pearce, 'who passed out to Harper, who passed in again for Pearce to shoot just inside the posts. Ashburton 5, St. Stephen's 1. Play was taken from St. Stephen's twenty-five by Stephenson, MacFarlane and-Lees.'How-ever, Lees was off-side and from the free hit play went to the other end. Mcllraith, Stephenson and MacFarlane soon reversed the game and MacFarlane shot St. Stephen's second goal. Ashburton 5, St. Stephen's 2. St ..Stephen's were again in Black .territory and were in the circle when the whistle was blown, with the score still Ashburton 5, St. Stephen's 2.
