SYDNEY, June 18. The New South Wales amateur golf championship opened on Saturday. Notable absentees are. Dr. R. H. Bettington and Ivo Whitton. .J. Ferrier, who .was regarded as the strongest contender, was beaten by G. R, Smith, 2 and 1. H. W. Hattersley narrowly escaped, only beating G. Capel at the last green, 1 up. , / ■ " ..
