FIVE SHOT DEAD.
GANGSTERS IN KANSAS CITY.
SUDDEN ATTACK ON POLICE.

NEW YORK, June 17
Four peace officers and one escaped conyiet were shot down and killed by a machine-gun gang to-day in front of the Union Railway Depot in Kansas City.
•It is thought that the gunmen were attempting to rescue the convict when they accidentally killed him. The attack took the form of a heavy cross fire with two machine-guns and rifles, which lasted but a few seconds The officers were returning with the convict to prison. They were attacked so suddenly that, they had no time to return the" fire .of the attackers who escaped in an automobile. It is-recalled that the convict .was.a close associate of the ring-leaders in the Lansing penitentiary break in May. The police believe that to-day's incident was part of a plot by south-west, em desperadoes, who terrorised this section of the country recently.
