FIFTY YEARS SYNE.

Washed.—This is what occurred at Plymouth, England, after a speech from "General" Booth, of the Salvation Army: "A rough-looking bulky man'stepped forward in a dilapidated jersey and trousers to correspond, .and related the: blessings he had received as a result oFhis conversion. Suddenly, before the . audience, .the _man , loosened two or three strings, kicked off the jersey and trousers, and stood confessed in the smart uniform of the Army—trim, orderly and. respectable. This circus trick had a'"' wonderful effect upon the audience. There at first a murmur or* surprise, and then' f a chcrus of 'Hallelujahs' from, all' parts of the meeting.", Druidism. —It is understood that a number of residents of Methven are anxious to establish a branch! of the Ancient Order of Druids in that locality. With this object in view, several gentlemen will meet delegates from Ashburton on Wednesday, when\ the matter*- will be fully discussed. The Debating Society.—There was a. gocd attendance last evening aii the meeting of the Ashbur.toh Debating Society, when the power wielded bystatesmen, warriors and poets was discussed. Mr Small will take with him ten of the finest horses in the district, including "Golden Eagle," by Electioneer, dam Imprimus, bred by Mr A. Quigley, Doyleston; "Imperial Willie," by Prince Imperial, dam Perkiit Warbeck mare, bred by Mr' F. W. Bishop, Tinwald. .'",<• '', Baptist Young Men's Society:—'The fortnightly meeting of the Baptist Young Men's Mutual Improvement Class was held on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance, with Mr Greenslade in the chair. The debate for the evening was ; "Should.the Half-holiday be Universal,' and should it be held on Thursday or Saturday?" Mr E. J. Tucker, supported by Mr W. Bell, spoke for Thursday, and Mr W. Inwood for Saturday. At the close, the meeting decided in favour of a universal half-holiday on Saturday by one vote.
Football.—A football match took place on the High School ground yesterday afternoon between the Hampstead School and HiglT School teams. The teams were fairly evenly matched, and the game resulted in a win for Hampstead by 5 points to 3.. Broom for Hampstead scored a try... which was converted by K. Rollitt," For the High School, Bremner scored, but the kick at goal was. a failure. Mr T. Austin acted as refgree.
