RAKAIA. The monthly meeting of the Rakaia Band of Hope was held in St. Mark's Schoolroom on Thursday evening. Mr A. Allan presided over a good attendance. The programme was as follows: Pianoforte solo, Minnie Kenward; pianoforte duet, Edith Kenward and Edna Kidd ; song, Doreen Pluck : song with chorus, Frances Rapiey, Violet Rapley, Myra Cromie, Nancy O'Connor, DvlisKaan, Nancy Kaan, Rosina Pluck/ Doreen Pluck, Beta Allen and Eileen Shannon; mouth organ solo, George Smith; recitations, Jeannie Croat, Mona McKiver, Jean Gray, June Saunders, Alice Allan, Beryl Clark; Ena Moore. Airs Palmer, Willie Greenaway, Norman Greenaway; dialogues, Eileen Shannon, Nancy Kaan, Nancy O'Connor, Dylis Kaan, Rosina Pluck, Doreen Pluck, Ret a Allen, Myra Cromie, Violet Rapley and Frances Rapley. Mr Allan showed some pictures. Miss E. S. Oakley was accompanist. The monthly meeting of the Rakaia Mothers' Union was held in St. Mark's Schoolroom on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Barnett presided, and the Rev. A. H. Barnett conducted tho devotional exercises. Mr Barnett gave an address. It was decided to ask a missionary to address the next meeting. Afternoon tea was served.

MOgNT SOMERS. The president >(Mrs G. Hood) presided over the monthly meeting of the Mount Somers Women's Institute, held in the library on Wednesday afternoon. One new member was proposed. Mrs Hood was appointed delegate to the New Zealand conference at Christchurch in July. Motions of sympathy were passed with MesdamestD. W. Herron and Box, sen., in their illnesses. An interesting demonstration on making sweets was given by Mrs F. (Peter, for which she was accorded, a vote of thanks. A competition for the best tatting was won by Miss H. Wightman, Mrs W. R. Munro being second, and in the competition for the best bottle cf sauce Mrs W. Edgar was first and Mrs G. L. Hood second. The sales tablewas in charge of Miss Qnantock. Misses N. Edgar, D. Hix and M. Comyns were hostesses.

At a meeting of church people it was decided to. give a public welcome home to the Rev. E. A. Osmers and Mrs Osmers in the library on Friday, June 30. It was decided to invite the Staveley-Bushsi.de and Alfcrd Forest districts to co-operate.

FAIRTON. The monthly meeting of the Fairton Women's Institute w<is held in tho hall on Thursday afternoon, the president (Mrs Chambers) presiding over a good attendance. A social afternoon was held in honour of Miss Thelma Dtlnphy, who is to be married shortly. On.behalf of members, Mrs Chambers presented Miss Dunphy with two pyrex dishes, and on behalf of the president, vice-presidents and committee, Mrs Oram presented Miss Dunphy with a bouquet made of uegs, blue bags and soap. Mrs Minogue (Ashbnrtcn) and Miss W. Andrew (Tihwald) gave an interesting char/pter sketch, and Mrs Mowat sang. The roll-call, a whistling solo, caused much amusement, Mrs AleCall and Miss T. Dunphy winning. The afternoon closed with community singing and the institute song.

HINDS. There was a fair attendance of young people at the weekly Bible Study Circle held at the Vicarage on Thursday evening. The learning of the new choruses before the lesson was greatly enjoyed. A gang of 12 painters and naperhangers employed by the Railway Department, some of them working under the No. 10 scheme, has been stationed at Hinds for the last three weeks papering' and. painting the two railway houses and painting the station, tanks and goods sheds. Owing to Mr P. O'Connor (stationmaster) being on sick leave, Mr Brown, of iJJunedin, is relieving at Hinds. Several sharp frosts have been experienced in the last few mornings, followed by bright, sunny days. This morning was dull and cold.
