UNEMPLOYED RELIEF
PROTEST BY FARMERS. USE OF UNDERGRADE WHEAT. (Special to tho " Guardian.") TIMARU, June 16. A motion protesting against a proposal to use under-grade milling wheat for bread to be eaten' by tho unemployed was carried at a meeting of the South Canterbury Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Fai'mers' Union to-day.
' In introducing the subject, Mr A. J. Davey said he had noticed that it had been suggested in Christchurch that the Minister for Employment should make use of such wheat. The speaker was afraid that unless reductions were given in milling and transport charges the consumer would receive very little benefit from the proposal. Tho motion was seconded by Mr J. Dobson.
The chairman (Mr P. R. Talbot) said that even if the wheat were given to the millers it would mean very little difference in the price of bread to the consumer. Ho also drew attention to the present system of supplying footwear f to the unemployed, and stated that in his opinion it would drive the retailers into the ranks of the unemployed. A member said that, in any case, it seemed unfair to make use of undergrade wheat for the purpose of making bread. The motion was carried unanimously.
