THE ASHBURTON CLUB REVIEW OF YEAR'S WORK The annual meeting of the Ash bur-! ton Croquet Club was held in the Borough Council Chandlers this afternoon, when the president (Mrs J. The year closed with a membership of 52 playing members and 10 honorary members. The playing season had been a wonderful success, tne club winning the South Canterbury Association's A, B, and C Hags and retaining the Gala Cup. Club competitors' were successfully conducted. A new shelter was built on the north side of the big lawn and it had filled a long-felt need. *Thc report concluded: "This report can lie closed on a note of anticipation. The New Zealand Council lias decided to hold the South Island championship tourney in Ashburton in January, 1934. To make up the full total of lawns required
for this event, the Bowling and Tennis Clubs have generously promised the use of a lawn each. The Domain staff has under preparation a piece of ground for a full-sized lawn and "the Allen ton Club will co-operate with this club and provide other lawns. Tho prospects are very bright for a keenly interesting and enjoyable season for 1933-34:"
The report and balance-sheet were adopted. It was agreed that a levy of 3d on each subscription should be paid toward the cost of the production of the croquet annual published by the New Zealand Council.
A number of letters regarding the South Island championships next January were held over for consideration by a special committee, which will later be set up to deal with preparations for the tournament. A vote of thanks was passed to the president for the good work she had clone for the club in the past year, and a similar vote was accorded the secretary. Mrs Smallbone stated that the membership had been limited to 50, and later raised to 55. She considered that the 50 limit should be returned to. Croquet was becoming very keen among women and there was a large waiting list of members. She thought there was room for another club in Ashburton and she understood that there was a movement in this direction on foot. She moved that .the limit of membership be 50. This was seconded by Mrs J. Thompson, who said the club would welcome competition by another croquet club. (Proceeding).
