ECONOMY PROGRAMME.
CURE ON THE PRESIDENT
WASHINGTON, June. 3.
The Senate's revolt has upset President Roosevelt's economy programme by 175,000,000 dollars (£35,000,000 at par). Even this curtailment of the cuts Mr Roosevelt asked for would have been nearly doubled but for the casting vote of" the Vice-President, Senator Garner.
The Senate has limited Mr Roosevelt's reduction of Avar veterans' compensation to 25 per cent. Senator Garner saved it from being limited to 15 per cent. A conference of both Houses is expected to accept the Senate's curb on the President. Senator Walsh (Democrat) crystallised Congress sentiment regarding the veterans' reductions. "Everyone is agreed that economies are necessary, and wo passed the bill giving the President power to reduce veterans' payments," lie says, "hut it is apparent to even the children, on the highways that a grave injustice has been done. "How can we go back to the people and say we did not correct them when the opportunity came."
