ENTERTAINMENTS.

MAJESTIC THEATRE "The Fires of Fates," the film version of the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous book, wJiieh will be shown finally to-night, tells the dramatic story of a man, wlia lias been given but six months more to live and his subsequent adventures in .the desert which culminate in a fierce tight with a raiding tribe.. Norman Walker, the director, succeeded in obtaining .the full co-operation of the Egyptian Government which gave every assistance in its power. The cast includes such players as Kathleen O'Regan, Lester Matthews, Dorothy Bartlam, Jack Raine and Donald Calthrop, had to look seriously to its laurels wnile on location in Egypt, for six Sudanese soldiers employed in native parts proved tu be the most remarkable natural actors ever seen. There is a very entertaining programme in support. HAKATERE LODGE SOCIAL. The Hakatere and Daphne Lodges held the first of a series of social evenings on Saturday in the Tancred Street Hall when there was a very large attendance. Cards were played during the early part of the evening and dancing occupied the second part of the programme, music being supplied by the Regal fiance Band. Mr J. Turnbull was M.C. ORANGE LODGE DANCE. There was a good attendance at the Orange Lodge dance held in the Orange Hall on Saturday night and an enjoyable evening was spent by all. Music for dancing was supplied by Terris' Dance Band and Mr <D. Wilcocks played an extra. Mr G. Church was M.C. TENNIS CLUB'S SOCIAL. The Baring Square Methodist Tennis Club held its annual closing day social in the schoolroom on Saturday evening. There Was a good attendance of members and friends and games and musical items occupied the evening. Pianoforte duets were given by Misses G. and B. Haydon. Mr G. Kelly was M.C. During the evening, the club captain !(Mr W. C. Bishop) expressed the pleasure of the committee at .the manner in which members had contributed towards the success of the season and presented the Morgan Oup (women's singles handicap) to Miss G. Haydon. Mr 0. F. Horn 11 (vice-presi-dent) presented the Higgins Cup (men's singles handicap) to K. Fowke. ASHBURTON MUSICAL CLUB An interesting paper on "The gentle art of taking time to live" was given by Mrs A. T. Smith at the opening meeting of the Ashburton Musical Club on Saturday evening. A varied programme of selections arranged by Mrs Smith was given by members. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames R. Holland and ID. F. Keir. Mesdames A.. C Williams, H. H. iPearce and Miss Margo Watt Mere the accompanistes. The programme was as follows: —Piano duct. "Grand Waltz" (Schuloff), Mrs A. C. Williams and Miss Margo Watt- violin duet, "Rondo" (Bohm), Mesdames W. G. MacDonald and A. G. McHardy; vocal solo, "By the Waters of Minnetonko," with violin obligato (Laurence), Miss E. Holland and Mrs A. G. McHardy; piano solo, "Finlandia" (Sibelius). Mrs A. C. Williams; violin solo, "Minuet and Gavotte" (Veracini), Mrs A. G. McHardy; vocal solo, "Wait" (D'Hardelot), Miss H. Brown; vocal duet, "Song of Florian" (Gudard), Misses H. Drummond and K. Sewell; piano solo, "Polonaise" (Macdowell), Miss Margo Watt; vocal solo with violin obligato, "Serenade" (Braga), Miss H. Drummond and Mrs A. C. McHardy; vocal trio, "The Little Sandman" (Brahms), Mesdames A. T. Smith, D. Lawson and Miss H. Drummond; vocal solos, with violin obligato, "If You Had Known" (Denza) and "Lullaby" (Scott), Mesdames D. Lawson and A. G. McHardy; piano solo, "Sonata" (Mozart), Miss L. Lewis; piano duet, "Slumber Song" and "Spring Song" t(iD'Ourville), Mrs A. C. Williams and Miss L. Lewis; vocal duet, "Nocturne" (Chaminade), Mesdames A. T. Smith and D; Lawson; piano solos, "Valse in A" (Brahms), and "Demande et Response" (Coleridge Taylor), Miss E. P. Thompson; piano solo, "Romance" (Rtubenstein), Mrs A. C. Williams.
