DUNCE MAKES GOOD.
A LIGHTNING CALCULATOR. When, 81 years ago, young Alfred Phillips left school at the age of seven, his schoolmistress said, "Good-bye, Alfred, I'm afraid you will always be a dunce, and never get much further than simple addition." To-day Mr Alfred Phillips, at the ripe old age of 88, is the grand old man of Bognor Regis, Susex. His energy shames many a youth in the town. He enjoys playing bowls to the tune of 18 to 21 ends up in the mornings, or alternatively a round of golf. Ho cycles to the golf course. But, best of all, this "dunce" claims to be the "world's quickest •sterling decimalist." He proved.it recently when, replying to a question, lie answered in several seconds that 3,670,000 times 2d was £11,484 7s 6d. He said he could mentally multiply by a million any sum under £lO. Thus it, was found in six seconds that 1,000,000 times £8 16s 9£d is £8,838,541 13s 4d. What a dunce!
