POLICE USE BATONS
RIOTING IN BRISBANE. COMMUNIST DEMONSTRATION. DECLINE TO WORK FOR: RATIONS (United Press Association—Copyright) BRISBANE, March 19. Three hundred men, reputed to he Communists, marched on the Treasury, threatening to invade the building. They demanded to see the Minister for Labour, because they declined to work for rations. When the mob threatened to become uncontrollable, the police drew their batons. In a melee several men were struck down. Later there was another demonstration outside the Trades Hall. One man struck Sub-Inspector Pugh, knocking him into the gutter. The crowd swarmed in to follow up this advantage, hut quickly retired when the police drew their batons. Several arrests were made.’
