FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From “The Guardian,” Mar. 20,1881.) Football.—A meeting of persons interested in the formation oi a football club was held at Quill’s Hotel on Saturday. Mr Maclaren was voted to the chair. It was resolved that those present form themselves' into a football club. The opening day was fixed for the second Saturday in April. The election of officers resulted :—Captain, A. Fooks; secretary, Mr E. Mayo; treasurer, Mr St. George; committee, Messrs Branson, Fooks, Maclaren. Hodder and Brett. It was decided to play according to the Rugby Union l ilies, and that tlie uniform snould consist of blue jersey and knickerbockers, with red belt and stockings. Quoit Club.—A- meeting of gentlemen desirous of forming a quoit club was held at the Royal Hotel on Saturday, Mr G. Parkin in the chair. Messrs C. Ireland 1 , Price, Jacobson, Brittain and Robinson were appointed a committee to draw up a code of rules. It was resolved that the name of the club be the Ashburton Quoit Club. Mr Bruce was appointed captain of the club, Mr Power treasurer, and Mr F. Maimvaring, secretary. Guard of Honour.—The Volunteers and Band will meet on Thursday at noon to arrange about forming a guard of honour for the visit of the Governor. On -Wednesday evening, Sergeant-Major Morgan will prepare men for the guard of honour. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “The Guardian,” Mar. 20,1906.) Cricket. —The following players will represent the Ashburton Cricket Club in the annual match with the Oust Wanderers, which will take place on Thursday next on the Domain Oval:— C. J. Harper, W. CL Roberts, J. Friedlander, H. Blunden, E. F. Nicoll, C. W. Nicoll, C. Harper, W. B. Denshire, J. Brown, P. L. Orr and G. Buchanan. Band of Hope.—The monthly meeting of the Ashburton United Band of Hope was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall last evening. There was a capital attendance, and Mr W. A. Sando occupied the chair. Miss E. Totty opened the programme with a piano solo, and the evening was taken up with -singing, recitations, dialogues, and' olubswinging by. six young girls and Miss M. Buchanan. The Rev. Walter Harris ga.ve an address.

Ratepayers’ Meeting.—At a meeting of Borough ratepayers to be held on Friday evening at the Municipal Chambers it is the intention of the Mayor to bring before tlie meeting the consideration of the .exhibition arid other matters concerning the Borough, in addition to the Domain pavilion scheme.
