STEAMERS LAID UP.

SLACKNESS IN CARGO TRADE. (Special to the “Guardian.”) AUCKLAND, August 25. Owing to slackness in the shipping trade, five of the Union Company's cargo steamers are laid up at Auckland, and others are idle at southern ports. The steamers laid up at Auckland are: The Waitomo, Kairanga, Waiteinata, Kurovv and Kaimiro. The Waitomo and Kairanga have been at anchorage in Hobson Bay for a long period but the Waitemata and the Kurow ha/ve been undergoing'overhaul, which is now completed. The Waitemata is to be taken to anchorage to-day and the Kiy*ow to-morrow. The Kaimiro arrived from Westport on Saturday, and all her crew are being paid off. ©he has been withdrawn from commission, until trade improves.
