BUSINESS NOTICES. NEW SEASON’S SEEDS AT FLETCHER BROS’ The following are only a few of the in Vegetables. A Short List of Novelties in Flowers I. SWEDISH GIANT CABBAGE. A new and marvellous production, known in Europe as the Cental or 1001 b Cabbage. A most rapid grower and great blight and drought resister. frows enormous heads, very solid and compact, and as hard as a cannon ball, frequently measuring 24 inches across; has very few outer leaves. Quality unsurpassed for delicacy of flavour • leaves are fine grained, tender and crisp. The most handsome and uniform Cabbage ever grown. Specimens grown in Sweden weighed over 001 b, whilst in Australia many growers report weights from 201 b to 501 b each. They also praise in glowing terms its edible qualities, being far superior to any other Cabbage grown in this country.—l/- per Packet, 4/- per Ounce, Ounce Lots only. Mrs A. A., of Waikiwi, Southland, writes:—“l am sending you a clipping out of our Local Paper, giving particulars of a Cabbage I showed at our Winter Show. It was a real beauty, and caused quite a sensation. Everyone wanted to know the kind it was. I told them it was the Swedish Giant Cabbage, and I procured the seed from Fletcher Bros., Ashburton.” One of the most interesting of the exhibits at the Winter Show was a Giant Cabbage. It is a splendid specimen of the “World’s Wonder” species, being so big and heavy that it required two men to carry it on to its bench. The heart is. about 30 inches in diameter, while the over-all diameter is about 4J feet. This Cabbage was grown and exhibited by Mrs A. A., Waikiwi. CURTIS’S NINE STAR PERENNIAL .. BROCCOLI Is quite hardy, defies frost, and will grow a splendid crop anywhere year after year. All the wholesale seedsmen of Great Britain are handling it, so that speaks for itself. Each plant will bear from 5 to 13 heads, and the crop will stand for years; in fact, at Mr Curtis’s ov/n Nursery one i bed has been down seven years, and in 1926 stood frosts of 30, 31 and 32 degrees on consecutive nights without losing a single leaf. Seed should be planted between August and November, and transplanted 4 feet apart in well manured ground.—l/6 per Packet. SWEDISH GIANT CAULIFLOWER. This magnificent new Cauliflower, specimens of which, weighing upwards of 301 b each, were exhibited in Copenhagen last season. It produces enormous Snow-White heads of uniform size, which are well protected by the leaves. It is of dwarf habit, veiy com- : pact, a rapid grower, and withstands the dry weather well. One of the earliest of the Giant forms, very hardy, stands a long time, , and is without doubt the heaviest, surest and best of all varieties introduced to this country. Sow from December to February for main crop, and for later crops a little may be sown every month until August. In 000 l districts, with water in abundance, seed may be sown all the year round.—l/- per Packet, CARTER’S FRUIT TOMATO. Carter’s have for many years been cross breeding to produce a smooth Tomato, with a 'solid flesh characteristic of the Continental and,American varieties, and have at last produced a perfect Tomato. It is a heavy cropper, most fleshy, and contains very little seed, practically the whole of the space being taken up with the well flavoured flesh. c The average fruit is about the size and l shape of a tennis ball. As a cooking variety it is unique, the skin being easily removed, and the shape and solidity of the flesh making it particularly good for Tomato sandwiches, also where the fruit has to be stuffed. Stock very limited.—2/- and 5/- per Packet. NEW DROUGHT-PROOF LETTUCE, “THE EVERLAST.” The most remarkable Cabbage Lettuce ever grown; will stand the hottest climate and the driest season without running to seed, the large heads remaining firm and crisp long after all others nave bolted or decayed. One sowing in spring will keep up a supply of salad all through the. summer. A Wyndham customer says:—“We had a very dry and hot October (the driest ever known in Southland), and I heard of seed failures everywhere. The Drought-Proof Lettuce I had from you, every seed grew, and I will grow no other in future.” —1/- per Packet. THREE NEW CUCUMBERS. “THE SERPENT,” A remarkable and interesting curiosity. The Cucumbers grow curled up like a snake, with head protruding, sometimes growing 6 feet in length.—l/per Packet. / ' “THE HORNED ZULU.” This variety is of a Deep Green Colour, with protruding points or horns. When ripe it turns to a Scarlet Orange Colour, .very tender and easily digested. The natives eat it when soft and ripe; it is then most refreshing.—l /- per Packet. “THE LEMON.” An almost round variety, with Yellow and Green, stripes, very prolific, tender, and of sweet flavour, resembling a Lemon in appearance; fine White Flesh. Best of all dwarf varieties. More digestible than ordinary sorts. —l/- per Packet; the 3 Packets for 2/6. THE BURPEE SWEET CORN. Rich and sweet. Larger and 10 days earlier than the famous Burpee’s Golden Bantam. A big, attractive ear, 7. inches long and If inches thick. A good size to eat from the cob—full of toothsome sweetness and nourishment, with the same buttery flavour that has given world’s fame to Burpee’s Golden Bantam. 5 to 54 feet tall, bearing an abundance of handsome, luscious ears. —l/- per Packet. BURPEE’S GOLDEN BANTAM ( SWEET CORN. This is America’s favourite Sweet Corn. It has the enviable reputation - of being the sweetest of all. Golden Bantam Sweet Com has a rich, sweet and buttery flavour, produces an abundance of hardy ears 5 to 6 inches long, closely set with broad, deep Golden Yellow kernals of luscious sweetness. The seed is quite hardy. To get best results successive sowing should be made.—6d per Packet. many Novelties and recent introduction will follow in the course of a few days. SYRIAN HONEY MARROW. “THE MECCA.” A large and handsome variety. Skin Red and White striped ; often growing to 601 b weight. Flesh Orange coloured, tender and sweet, and of delicious flavour. Exceedingly fine for cooking and much appreciated by connoisseurs. —1 /- per Packet. MANGO MELON OR VEGETABLE PEACH. A hardy and prolific Vegetable Fruit. Grows in all climates. When cooked young is superior to Vegetable Marrow ; when ripe and Yellow makes beautiful White transparent Preserves, much finer than Pie Melon. Looks like a large Orange when ripe. The late small fruit makes excellent Pickles. Use young green ginger for flavouring the Preserve.—6d per Packet. BURPEE’S ICEBERG LETTUCE. CRISP AS ICE—TENDER AND JUICY, A very popular variety of medium size and outstanding brittleness. , Compact heads, with a solid heart of Clear White colour, protected by a few tender outer leaves. It withstands the heat of summer remarkably well, and keeps in first-class condition for a long time.—6d per Packet, THE WORLD’S WONDER PEA. Truly a World’s Wonder. The plants are simply covered with pods up to 6 inches in length ; each pod i contains an average of from 9 to 11 large Peas of delicious flavour. Wonderful cropper, and continues to bear for a long period.—l/- per Packet. PEA—“CHANCELOT.” This has been proved to be one of the finest main cron Peas on the market. It is of robust constitution, growing to a height of 3 feet, and produces large, Dark Green pods mostly in pairs, containing 10 to 12 Peas in a pod, of luscious flavour. Simply a marvellous cropper. Sow Peas 4 inches apart in rows.—l/- per Packet. SHARPE’S EVERY-DAY PEA. A Pea to sow to-day, to-morrow, any day, every day—all the year round Pea. This Pea is all that is wanted. By sowing at intervals it will furnish Green Peas throughout the season, and out of season too, with suitable treatment. Height—l2 to 15 inches. It requires no stakes. Can be sown throughout the autumn and winter months. A marvellous, a certain and continuous cropper—it never lets you down. Sow Peas 1 inch apart.—l/per Packet. PEA—SUTTON’S EARLY DWARiL This is a wonderful cropper, of good quality, and quite 2 weeks earlier than William Hurst. This Pea should be sown not less than 1 inch apart. —6d per Packet. RUNNER BEAN. SCARLET EMPEROR IMPROVED. A re-selection of this popular variety, embodying immense size without coarseness. Indispensable for exhibition purposes. Notwithstanding the 'enormous size of the pods, the flavour is excellent. The plant is robust, and a free setter.—l/- per Packet. BROAD BEANS. SHARPE’S CONQUERORLONG POD. The longest and best of all Long Pod Beans. Pods 12 to 15 inches long, unrivalled for exhibition and general purposes. This stock has recently been re-selected, and what we now offer is much truer to type and more prolific than the old stock.—l/- per Packet. BEET—CHELTENHAM GREEN LEAVED (Specially Selected Stock). This variety has Dark Red flesh, and free from the earthy taste that spoils some varieties. This very fine stock is the result of long endeavours of the grower to produce a perfect type, and is quite distinct from the stocks usually offered under this name. Once grown, always grown. A New Plymouth customer says:—“The Cheltenham variety was far away the best out of the three kinds I tried this season.” —6d per Packet. r CARROT—“THE IDEAL.” It is quite coreless, and has tender, almost transparent flejsh of rich colour.' This is a new Carrot of French origin, which we have pleasure in offering, ap we believe it to be one of the finest high-class varieties where quality is the main consideration. Although it has fine leaves, “The Ideal Carrot” is a quick and vigorous grower, and will be found to be the ideal Carrot either for Householder or for the Market Gardener who wishes to supply products of extra good quality,—6d per Packet. Mr S., of New Plymouth, writes:— “Your Ideal Carrot is all you say about it, and I am strongly recommending it to my friends.” CLIMBING BEAN—SNAKE OR YARD LONG. Bears a large crop of long, stringless Beans up to 3 feet .in length, and if used while young are very tender and have a decided Asparagus flavour. Does well in warm situations.—l/- per Packet. BURPEE’S SURE CROP STRINGLESS WAX BEAN. A most prolific variety of superlative quality. The handsome, Rich Yellow pods are slightly ourved, averaging 6 to 7 inches in length. They are almost round, 4-inch wide, very meaty, and sweet, and perfectly stringless at all stages. Free branching, but sturdy and upright, carrying a heavy crop of magnificent pods.
