The. wicket was easy, and improving as the day progressed. Ihe outfield l was slow. Wellington won the toss and batted. Baker and Foley opened, the former taking strike to* Dunning. Baker hit the third ball to the leg boundary, hut was neatly caught next hall hy Knight in the slips. 4—l—4. Hollings was the next batsman. Runs came slowly, Dunning and Elmes howling steadily, giving the batsmen few opportunities. The fielding was keen. When the total was 25 Lem in replaced Dunning. Lemin, who was making his first appearance* in Shield cricket, sent down very accurate balls. Alloo. then replaced Elmes. An hour’s play produced 40 runs, Hollings being 26 and Foley 4. Lemin, having howled seven overs for eight singles, was relieved by Moloney. Foley, hatting doggedly, reached double figures in 70 minutes. Hollings was more aggressive, hut anything above a single was very exceptional. When Hollings was 15 he made a weak stroke to an off break from Moloney and dragged it on to his wicket. 61—2—15. Dowry came on. When the total was 72 Dunning replaced Alloo and Lemin replaced Moloney.
